Hunger won out and Sartin lifted the bowl to his nose and sniffed the ugly slop. Sartin ate a couple of finger scoops of food, and then set the bowl down. Nausea stirred in his stomach. Sartin sat back against the wall and schemed how he could escape Jamesdavis and Tobydallum’s clutches.
He didn’t lie to Tobydallum when he offered to fish for the humans. He would feed himself first, of course, then grab them a fresh meal. Sartin stretched out his tail, cramped from its awkward sitting position. His side still ached from the injury Jamesdavis inflicted upon him.
The door roused Sartin from his thoughts. Jamesdavis and Tobydallum entered the room, with Norris and the other two men.
“Today, you swim,” Jamesdavis said. “We will remove the shackles from your neck and arms, but retainthe tether around your tail.”
“I get fish for you and for me.”
“That’s what Dallum tells me. We’ll see about that.”
