Chapter 82

“He’s caught again! Pull him aboard, gentleman!”

The pull of the net was enough to release him from its grasp. Sartin dropped to the water below, twisting in just enough time to enter headfirst rather than splat on his back or side or stomach. The cold water soothed the open wounds on his tail, wrists, and neck.

Not yet oriented, Sartin swam away from the ship, as far as he could get. Twenty minutes. Tobydallum hadtold him he could hold his breath for twenty minutes. Sartin resolved to get as far as he could until he had to surface for air.

He spotted Sommar ahead in the murky water. Sommar stopped, suspended under the water. His smile lit up the water, like a beacon Sartin could follow. Sartin pumped his tail harder, despite the pain and exhaustion. Sommar ascended and Sartin moved in an arc to meet him at the water’s surface.

Sommar grabbed his face and kissed him, almost before Sartin could refresh his breath.

“I’m never letting you go again,” Sommar said.
