Castien, an elf mage who cannot speak except with the aid of a magical dagger, has been captured while on a mission. He is freed by his companion, the warrior elf Daeron, and returns with him to Daeron’s homeland. There they will join forces to rid the land of a Lord bent on the destruction of the elves.<br><br>Theirn, a young half-elf thief, attempts to rob Castien during his stay at an inn and is caught by the mage. Much against Theirn’s will, he is enlisted into the group of rebel elves. “More than the normal complement, yes.”


“This does not bode well for you or your village if they find we are not here,” Castien signed and mouthed with the hope Beleg understood him.


“We are prepared,” Beleg replied with a tight smile. “Other than myself all of the menfolk have gone down to the shore and as soon as I am certain you have made your way out of the village I shall go as well.”


“But the women and children?” Theirn asked with deep concern for their safety.


“They are well hidden where none would think to look. I shall not tell you lest…” Beleg gave them a slight smile to take the sting from his words.


Castien nodded.“Lest we be caught. We understand.”
