Chapter 15

“Yeah, I know,” Jared continued. “I know. He probably would have never liked anyone I was with. That’s why I cut him out of my life. I saw what my mother had seen years ago—a narcissistic fuck who mainly cares about himself. It was always going to be about him. He threatened me with money, and I was already supporting myself. It was ridiculous.”

“So you don’t know how he’s doing?”

“He married a young woman, younger than us. She had a baby. He retired. They sold the house and moved to somewhere in Wyoming—a really late midlife crisis.”

David chuckled again.

“He sent me a picture of the new baby. He and his wife are holding him. He named him Jared also. He told me that he was my replacement, that with this one he’d do it right.”

“That must have been hard for you,” David said, concern in his voice.

“It was a little. I had already written him off, so it was just him being nasty. It kind of helped when I found out that his new wife had left him.”
