Chapter 15

“Where are we going?” Brynn sputtered.

Nikki held her closer as her body shook. “To the hospital.”

The younger woman halted her feet, staring at Nikki with fear. “No, we aren’t.”

“You’re freezing, Brynn,” Nikki protested.

“Anywhere but there. Please,” Brynn pleaded, her eyes glistening with tears.

The tone her voice held and the terrified expression on her face caused Nikki to nod against her better judgment. “Okay,” she began slowly, easing her arm back around the quivering woman. “How about we make it to my apartment and you warm up there?” Nikki offered, concerned that the nurse was losing her mind. She had to know how dangerous it had been to put herself in the situation she was in and couldn’t fathom what would keep her from her place of employment. It was as if the woman were afraid of something and Nikki wanted nothing more than to help her, starting with removing her from the weather. Brynn nodded and allowed Nikki to urge her forward.
