TJ shrugged. “Let’s just say I’ll believe it when I can see it.”

“Hmm.” Donovan filed that information for later. “Did you always want to be a small-town doctor?”

TJ’s face pinched as if he’d taken a bite of a sour lemon. “No.”

“But, you’re great at it. Mary, at the post office, said so, too.”

TJ shrugged. “I do what I can.”

Donovan had a feeling he’d struck a nerve. Cautiously, he fished for more information. “What kind of doctor did you want to be?”

“It didn’t pan out. I’m here now. That’s all that matters.” The slight chill in TJ’s tone and the sudden tension in his face and shoulders warned Donovan to change subjects and fast. He waited a beat and tread carefully ahead. “I’m surprised some man hasn’t snatched you up already. You’re smart. Successful. Handsome. Everything to offer a man for a lifetime.”

TJ slowed his chewing. “I could say the same about you.”
