Chapter 40

Kitt reached for him, but they remained inches apart.

Another wave hit her hard, knocking her back into the water.

“Kitt!” Cain jumped in.

Mitch hit the gas. The rear of the Jeep fish-tailed. “Cain! I’m moving this fucking log now. Grab Kitt!”

Cain barely held his head above water as he made his way slowly to her side. The log shifted to allow some water past but pinned them against the bridge. Kitt cried out.

Mitch punched the accelerator, fought for control, then tried again. The rope tightened so much he feared it would break, allowing the obstacle to slam both Cain and Kitt relentlessly into the cement and metal beams.

Come on.He added more gas. Slowly, ever so slowly, the log budged. It cracked and groaned. Snapping noises came next. Encouraged, he kept at it. Seconds ticked by, but finally it relented. “Grab onto the log. I’ll pull you in.”
