A small hint of apple pie drew his attention. He latched on, realizing that Calix’s unique scent did indeed remind him of fresh apple pie. Putting on the turbos, he easily followed the trail straight to a cabin, sliding to a stop at the front door.

Instead of wasting time changing, he let out a loud cry, one of duress, demanding help.

Quiet footfalls carried to his ears. A moment later, the front door opened. Calix stood in the doorway, dressed in the same jeans and shirt that he’d worn earlier.

“What is it?”

Mitch vocalized. He jumped off the porch, took a few steps, then looked back and let loose another small call.

“Wait up. I need to get my bag.” Calix disappeared inside, before reappearing a few seconds later with an old-fashioned black doctor’s bag.

Mitch hissed, trying to convey urgency.
