Chapter 29

Sam still had Jordan in his contacts. He called him as he walked over to the window and looked out at the street. Yellow cabs stretched out as far as the eye could see, brake lights almost festive in the darkness.

It took Jordan a little while to pick up, but he did pick up. “Hi, Sam.” He sounded exhausted, but professional. He didn’t have a lot of emotion in his tone at all. “What can I do for you?”

Sam’s throat hurt. How had things gotten to such a cold place between them? “I called to talk to you about the message you left on ‘my’ profile. Um, I can see why the profile would have upset you. The bio I mean. I would never have put that into my bio, if I made a profile. Which I didn’t.”

Sam slapped the side of his own head. He’d never felt so useless and ineloquent.

“Whatever. It’s not important.” Jordan’s voice had shifted, and become ragged. “I said all I had to say.”
