Chapter 15

As dawn lit the distant opening to the cave, they began to disperse, silent and secretive as gray cats going forth into the daybreak. They slipped quietly around the city and prepared for their tasks in small groups, often cloaked by subtle spells from any watchful eyes. Near nightfall, one group would converge on the improvised prison camp, while another would attempt to invade the premier’s mansion and either capture or kill him. Without his powerful status to direct the enforcers, the mages reasoned much of the government machinery would grind to a fast halt. If they also reached the rogue mage, so much the better. His punishment would be severe, probably fatal. Anyone who went over to evil and acted against his kind deserved and could expect nothing less.
