It was too much and not enough at the same time, and I had to fight to breathe, making my lungs burn as they did after holding my breath underwater for too long.

Sawyer kept talking as he rubbed me down, until Preston joined us, carrying the requested clothes.

“Hi,” he said with a warm smile. He must have seen something on my face, because he laid a hand on Sawyer’s shoulder and squeezed. “Sweetheart, I’m sure Wade can manage the rest himself.”

“Oh. Of course.” Sawyer stepped away and held out the towel. “Here. You can change in the bathroom. I’ll make you a cup of tea to warm up.”

“Thanks.” I toed off my shoes, grabbed the towel, and fled to the bathroom, where I peeled off my clothes. As I dried my skin, I suddenly missed Sawyer’s warm hands and easy chatter. After pulling on the T-shirt, I stared at myself in the mirror. I could hardly recognize myself. My hair was a mess, the shirt was tight and on the short side, and there was something wild in my otherwise mellow blue eyes.
