Chapter 3

“Are you even a person?” Noel asks. Smart boy, He’s not fooled by Wyatt. He seems determined to get an answer.

“I was a person once. Now I’m something else, something more,” Wyatt says, surprising himself with his own honesty.

Noel isn’t the first homeless person Wyatt has talked to, so it isn’t that. But there’s something about this young man that has Wyatt feeling odd and slightly off balance.

It’s not even the scent of Noel’s blood, although that’s enticing, intoxicating almost. Wyatt has been around plenty of blood in his time. He’s not a mindless animal driven only by his need to feed.

“Are you a vampire?” Noel asks, and he is a smart man. Not all people who see Wyatt’s teeth jump to the vampire conclusion. Not when his fangs are different from what’s shown in most of the Hollywood films about vampires.

“Yes, but if you tell anyone they won’t believe you,” Wyatt warns.

“Who am I going to tell?” Noel asks with a snort.

“Friends? Family?” Wyatt suggests.
