Ali appeared with a black bag, and then he disappeared again. “He needs to watch his brother and sister,” Mrs. Shaladi told him. “And I don’t need him to see this.”

Cameron couldn’t argue with that. He helped strip Jason down and turned his face away at the sight of so much gore. Even Mrs. Shaladi—Dr. Shaladi, Cameron supposed—hissed and drew back. “He should not be alive,” she told him in a flat tone, turning her face to Cameron. “Why is he alive?”

“I don’t know.” He took a deep breath. He was no stranger to blood or to injury, but this was different somehow. This was Jason. Jason wasn’t supposed to get hurt.

“You do. He wasn’t fighting the unseen things with a weapon. He used his hands. He is…not like us?” She winced at her lack of vocabulary.

Cameron sighed. “It’s not my story to tell.”

“Something is happening here, Cameron.” She took out a needle and thread from her kit. “He is part of it?”
