Chapter 7

“I’m an orphan.” Well, if that wasn’t one way to tell his story, Evan didn’t know what was.

Lucas reeled back in his chair, his eyes wide in shock and confusion. “You’re what?”

Evan imagined Lucas was conjuring up images of a small boy with dirt on his face, holding an empty bowl in silent request for a second serving ala Oliver Twist. Evan’s childhood was far from that, thankfully. His parents doted on him from the time he was eighteen months old, when his mother and father adopted him, until their untimely death. It was the three of them against the world, until it was only Evan.

Evan let out a bitter laugh. “My parents were involved in a terrible car accident five years ago. A truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and his eighteen-wheeler hit them head-on. From what I was told, they died on impact.”

“Oh Evan.” Lucas reached out to grab Evan’s hand again. “I’m so sorry. What a tragic thing to go through.”
