“Neither does Rick,” Lilly said. “They can keep each other company.”
“I don’t know,” Shay said, still reluctant.
Melissa stepped in. “We’d be glad to come. Can I have your address?”
“Wonderful!” Lilly said and began to give Melissa the information. As she did, Shay looked at Dwayne. He was smiling but not looking in Shay’s direction.
“Oh, look! There’s Barb and Don Hester,” Lilly said. “Did you know he’s in the diplomatic corps? Come on, let’s go say hi.”
“You go on,” Shay said, “I…I…want to catch up with some of my football buddies. We’ll see you later.”
“Okay, but be sure you show up,” Lily said with a pouty smile. She gave Shay a hug and pulled Dwayne away, waving and calling to Don and Barb.
“Why did you say we’d go to Lilly’s?” Shay asked as he watched Lilly and Dwayne depart.
“Because you want to talk to him. You know you do. You’ll regret it if you don’t.” Melissa took Shay’s arm and they walked back across the street to the school.9
