“I don’t know, Paige. He’s divorced now, but…” He rubbed his hands over his face. “I think it’s best I just leave it be. It would just bring back bad memories.”
“Of your past?”
“Of school. Not Karl, but of everything else.” Deepan grimaced. “Karl reminded me that our school reunion was this weekend. I was trying to forget about it.”
Paige was silent for a moment, watching him curiously. Deepan could see the cogs turning. He had mentioned that he had gone to the local high school and told Paige of all the things that had happened to him—Paige was an excellent listener—so he didn’t need to reiterate why he hated high school.
“If you have such bad memories of the place, why did you come back?” Paige asked. “I still can’t understand that.”
“I came back because the job was better than my previous one.”
