“Are they looking at me?” Eddie murmured to Kaeva.

“Yeah.”

“Are they…It is—I mean are they dangerous?”

“Not as dangerous as I am,” Kaeva said honestly.

“Cool.” Eddie inched closer to Kaeva, and Kaeva stepped away, keeping plenty of space between them.

“How many people live here?” Eddie asked.

“Few hundred.”

“All Estranged?”

“Yep. Well, except for some of the kids. We can’t tell about some of them, yet.”

“Kids?” Eddie repeated, startled.

Kaeva cocked an eyebrow. “They happen.”

“Yeah, I guess, sure,” Eddie agreed absently. “But where do they all…how do they all live?”

Kaeva explained to Eddie that Miracle’s two dozen island maintenance buildings had each been converted into a combination power station, guard post, and public-access compost toilet and recycle shower area. The stations served as makeshift town centers, and each town center had a representative on the City’s governing Council.

“Holy organization, Batman,” Eddie said.
