There’d been confusion and fear mumbling together into incoherent phrases. Someone had been extremely angry, and of all the expressions on all the faces, Kaeva’s had been the one that had looked the worst.


Eddie hadn’t been able to get a clear read on anything. The drugs and the chaos the kid’s arrival had made clarification impossible. Eddie had never seen anything so disturbing in his life. Not so up close and personal, anyway. Gillian’s removal had been sad, but calm. The shooter Eddie had picked up on in the cab had been scary, but the event itself had taken place blocks away. Apparently there really was a difference between hearing something in his head and being there in Vivi-Comm Techni-Bright clarity.


Before he’d arrived, Eddie had thought he had a pretty hard time having to deal with his Estrangement, but if the kid had been any indication as to just how awful Estrangement could get, Eddie hadn’t experienced shit.


Eddie sighed at the ground. “Intensity intensifies.”
