In the wake of several near-cataclysmic events, humanity created the Cure, a DNA-altering antidote to death by disease and old age. “Which means he might not like you nearly as much as he seems to if he weren’t about to die,” Kaeva said to the earthworm struggling in the mud.


The worm didn’t buy that any more than Kaeva’s gut instinct did. The way Eddie had looked at him while Eddie had rubbed his feet…The softened edges of Eddie’s gaze when Kaeva had been buried inside him…That meant something, didn’t it? Or was that the lovesick virgin talking?


Not that Kaeva was a virgin. Not entirely.


The earthworm reared up as though mocking him. Kaeva silently agreed with the critter. He was being an idiot. Quite possibly a starry-eyed, semi-virginal idiot who saw affection where there was only sexual release. Eddie’d been very fucking clear about that, hadn’t he? For all Kaeva knew, and for all his darker thoughts suspected, Eddie was only enjoying what was available. He wasn’t going to get any off Lake or Oberon. Eddie didn’t seem to like women at all, so his options were limited.
