“That it issomething special,” Eddie murmured, and his comment had nothing to do with what was happening between him and the boy or anyone or anything that had to do with Estrangement. Kaeva and Eddie’s special went beyond biometrics, and Eddie had known that too, no matter how many times he’d said otherwise. It was easier to say goodbye if what was being left behind wasn’t important. Eddie could walk away if he told himself that there was no reason to stay.


Except, maybe he didn’t want to walk away. Maybe he wanted to be here. In this moment. Doing this thing…Whatever it was he was doing, and even if it meant he was going to get blasted to Heaven instead of taking the stairs.
