In the wake of several near-cataclysmic events, humanity created the Cure, a DNA-altering antidote to death by disease and old age. But all cures come with side effects: a small percentage of the population develops a wide range of powers, some lethal to others and some lethal to the wielder.<br><br>These people are called the Estranged, hunted and shunned, safe only on the Island of Exile. It is here that Kaeva and Eddie meet ... and where they set a prophecy in motion, quite possibly sealing their own demise, and even the end of Exile.

“There is nothing else.” Eddie huffed a breath and shrugged again. “At least there wasn’t anything else. Do you think there’s something else? Did you know there was? Why didn’t you say so if that was the case? Does Kaeva know? Why did—”


Lake lifted one hand and held it out, palm toward him. Stop. “I think that Scanning is only part of your Estrangement, Eddie. And no, I didn’t know before. And no, I don’t think anybody did. It’s starting to make sense to me now, though.” Lake didn’t explain further. He turned his attention to Zunella and asked, “Do I dare to use the word Balancer?”


Zunella merely nodded, apparently dumbstruck.


Eddie couldn’t stop himself from giving her an eyebrow lift and tilting his head. What do you think of your magnets now?


Lake offered Eddie a smile. “What do youthink, Eddie?”
