“Secondly, Lennon Perig is not an asset. He’s a private citizen. He’s not employed by the government. He’s not a government contractor. He’s purely civilian, and he’s not obligated to respond to orders from anyone in the NSA.” Ben found that he’d clenched his hands into fists at his sides and forced himself to release them.

“He’s an American. He’ll do what he’s told and he’ll like it.” Townsend waved a hand.

Ben blinked at his colleague. “Did you just sit out of Civics classes when you were in school, or don’t they have those in Maryland?” He leaned against the door. “That’s not how we work here. Last time I looked at what we actually do, we defended the rights of civilians to live their lives and make their choices.”
