Chapter 53

“Unfortunately, Lennon, we don’t all have that luxury.” Kaden pressed his lips together. “Your country needs you.”

“To do what, exactly?” Lennon held his glass up to his lips but didn’t even pretend to drink. “Here’s the thing, Kaden. You can’t force me to create something. It doesn’t work like that. The kind of person who simply declares a human being to be an ‘asset’ of an empire isn’t looking to design medical bots that will save lives. They’re looking to hurt people, and that’s not something I’m willing to do.”

“What, you think that Polzin died easy?” Kaden sneered and leaned across the table. “You think that he just closed his eyes and went to sleep? You hanged a man, Lennon. You made that choice. And he died horribly. You think you’ve got some kind of moral superiority over the rest of us, you think you’re too good to make weapons that would keep your fellow citizens safe—”

Ben banged on the table. “That’s enough of that, Townsend, or help me God.”
