Chapter 29

Mason lowered his eyes to the dash to avoid having to watch Jack approach the driver’s door, and even though he knew it was childish, he didn’t unlock when Jack grabbed for the handle. After a short pause, Jack knocked on the window and Mason responded by merely lowering the glass. Without a word, Jack reached through the opening and punched the button to the release the locks. Mason turned his head away as the door was opened, heard gravel shift as a body resettled and startled when Jack laid a palm on his thigh.

“I wasn’t sure you were coming back.”

Mason sniffed a breath of disbelief through his nostrils. “I rented the cottage, remember? Besides, I couldn’t very well just leave you up here, could I?”

He turned his face in just enough time to catch Jack’s smile. “I’ve been left in stranger places.” He squeezed the muscle of Mason’s leg lightly. “Look, Mason, you’re a nice guy…”

“Don’t,” Mason stopped him. “I don’t want to have this conversation again—”
