Chapter 12

He was frozen. For an eternity, he couldn’t move. Why was Christopher there? Why had he bothered to show up at all? What sort of game was this? Did Christopher really want to be friends? Gage supposed he could deal with that. He had been mostly in love with his best friend, Kirby, and he had never even suspected. He could handle Christopher. There was nothing to be afraid of.

That thought broke his paralysis. He put his hands in their proper places, and then there was music. The first chords of “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard.” And then he was singing, and his voice sounded fine. His attention wandered around the bar, but no matter how much he tried, he couldn’t stop his gaze from drifting back to Christopher. The butterflies in his stomach calmed, and the weight that had been on his shoulders evaporated.
