Chapter 25

They won the first set, and Christopher couldn’t stop his grin as they slipped under the net to switch sides. Their teamwork solidified in the second set, until it felt like they had been playing together for months. He could anticipate Gage’s plays, could anticipate the way his body moved. He wondered if that would be the case in every situation, and no matter how hard he tried, Christopher couldn’t let go of that question. It felt like the answer was yes. It felt like it was instinctive.

With the score tied at eleven, Bodie delivered a serve straight down the middle, aimed for the back line. Gage dove for it, his body fully extended, his face set with determination. He bumped the ball off the back of his thumb, saving it from the ground with enough height for Christopher to get under it. He popped it up in the air and grinned as Gage jumped to his feet to knock it over the net. But the grin faded when Christopher saw the blood flowing down Gage’s arm.

“Time!”
