Chapter 93

“Eh?”

“It’s Kipp.”

“I’m not asleep.”

“Of course not. I have to leave. Sir’s had a stroke, and Geoff asked me to come to the hospital.”

“Are you driving?”

“No. I’ll leave the Mercedes for Uncle Brad. He’s staying with you for a while longer. Hyde will drive me.”

“All right. Come see me tomorrow, after you’re done at city hall.”

“I will.” I bent down and kissed his forehead. “Good night, Granddad. Sleep well.” And don’t you die on me!

He put his arms around me, and he murmured against my cheek, “My boy.” For a second his voice was gruff. “Good night, Kipp. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I walked out of his room. “Thanks, Uncle Brad. You can go in now.”

“Uh…Kipp, do you mind if I spend the night at Silver Birch?”

“Of course not. It’s your home. Do you have a cell phone?”

“No.”

“All right. I’ll have to let Beauchamp know I won’t be home tonight but you will.” I’d also have to tell him we were related. “Hyde, just let me make this phone call.”
