Chapter 71

“Anyway, the families living on what’s now your property slowly died off themselves. By the late 1800s only one woman was left—her name was Miranda. I’ve found some descriptions of her. She was wild, a real strange character. Long tangled hair, always dressed in black. But I understand she had a kind of wild, untamed beauty that attracted a lot of men. She slept with a lot of them.”

Michael smoked and thought.

“It seems people were most afraid of her. See, she had this kid…a baby boy. Like, two years old. And everyone in Stoketon at that time believed the kid was not somebody’s husband’s mistake but the spawn of the devil. And from what I can gather, this belief extended to even the most reasonable people in town.”

“Oh my God, that’s ridiculous.”
