“Survival of the fittest. We were smarter than it. We knew about the plant, therefore we survived.”

“But what about the animal? We were in its den. It was only defending what was rightfully its home.”

“Why are we arguing about this?” Ulissa turned to look at her. “The creature died, it was our fault. It’s the circle of life. You know that pit plant eats lots of jungle animals. What deserves to live more, the pit plant or the animals it eats? That’s nature.”

“We’re the trespassers here.”

“We’ve always been the trespassers. Ever since we came to the planet decades ago. Either you accept that humanity exists like this or you don’t. Anyway, your whole job is to kill animals from Harr. How did you not think of this before now?” Ulissa turned and started walking again.

“That’s not fair,” said Yaliana, angrily following. “I’m not smart and philosophical like you. I don’t think about things like that until they’re in my face. Like that poor animal that’s dying right now.”
