“I know.”
Try as he might, Dexter’s voice cracked.
“You were supposed to be there for me.”
Dexter couldn’t hold in these tears. “I’m sorry.”
Colin’s tears turned angry. He lashed out and punched Dexter in the chest. It didn’t hurt, not much. It probably would if he wasn’t so drunk and actually focused on hurting him. But Dexter let him go ahead and hit him.
“You weren’t there!” Colin shouted and hit again. “You left me, Dexter! You weren’t there!”
And Colin let Dexter go ahead and cry. “I’m sorry, Colin.”
Colin cried. He hit Dexter. Dexter cried and let Colin shout and hit him over and over until he just pulled him into his arms. At first, Colin struggled to push him away and Dexter wasn’t going to force him into a hug if that wasn’t what he wanted, but then Colin latched onto his shirt and clung to him.
“You weren’t there, Dexter.” He sobbed into his shoulder. “You fucking weren’t there.”
