“Raised in Atlantic City,” he said with another wink, and Daniel realized the accent was part Jersey. “Dad met Mom in Thailand when he was active in the Marines. Brought her back so he could deal cards at the casinos. In fact, I just got off a plane from visiting mycousins in Bangkok when I had the weird urge to come and see you. Left my bag in the car.”

Once again, Sury’s gaze focused on Daniel as she spoke the words, “Yindī thī? d?? khu?.”

Karden offered a slight bow with his hands pressed together. “Nice to meet you as well, Suryodaya.” He turned to the frowning Daniel and his smile softened. “Let me buy you lunch. Just lunch,” he added quickly, raising his hands in mock surrender. “I saw a nice Italian place just down the street. I got a feeling…” he paused again, then tossed his hair back as if deciding something. “Look, if there is something you wanna get past, I’m your guy.”
