Chapter 36

Guilt gnawed at Daniel. He remembered the distinct splatsound when Karden leapt off the fire truck in his dream, but he’d been too distracted by the firefighter outfit to think clearly. The puzzle pieces were there, he thought as they chucked the last of the soggy material into the dumpster. They returned to the gallery in silence. Karden kept an eye on Daniel, but said nothing.

The four returned to see Jazz standing at the edge of the performance floor, phone in hand with the insurance company. Sadly, the soaked basket sat near the flooring, part of which suffered damage. “Someone will be here first thing in the morning,” said Jazz, tapping an end to the call. “It could have been a lot worse if you hadn’t been working downstairs,” she told Daniel.

“Jazz, Maddy, I am so sorry,” Daniel began, but Jazz waved a hand in his face.
