“I didn’t know if it would, only James has cared for it over the years.” Paulo laughed again, the high pitch of it betraying his growing instability. He waved a hand at Daniel. “Now, give me the flash drive, Daniel dear.”

“And then what?” asked Daniel flatly.

Paulo blanched. “I…I don’t know,” he said honestly.

“Paulo, enough. The police are on their way. This ends now,” he said, silently praying the mechanic actually calledthe police.

“No. No, it doesn’t end like this,” said Paulo, slowly rising to his feet. “It can’t end like this. You still don’t understand. Daniel, you are mine. The book is mine. You know this, Daniel.”

“I know I am not getting on that plane,” said Daniel. “And you need to let me know how far this will go, Paulo.”

“It goes as far as I say it will!” shouted Paulo.

“Technically, that is not true,” came a familiar voice from the other side of the car. Paulo whirled toward the sound, the gun firing blindly and shattering the driver-side window.
