She started slowly, “Well…debudding is when the appropriate steps have been taken to prevent her horns from forming.”

And that was it—the thing that had nagged Leo without him knowing what it was, and the thing that Leo had finally realised as they’d been playing in the petting pen. None of their goats had horns. Not a one.

Gordy looked even more confused after she answered then he had before. “What? But how?”

“Most people use a special iron,” she said. “Although there is also a gel that—”

“A what?” Gordy gasped the word. “Did you say an iron? As in a hot iron? As in, they burn the head?”

“Yes,” she said, her voice calmer than Leo could imagine himself managing. “It’s very common actually. And people do have mixed opinions on it, which is why I’m asking if it’s something you’ve done. Just so you know, for our own babies, we do use analgesics. And it is a relatively quick process that most recover from quite quickly and quite nicely.”
