Chapter 19

“Their heads will probably explode.”

They lapsed into silence as the car approached Colney Heath. Jesse had been there once or twice, though only because he once partied with a girl from there. He idly wondered whatever happened to her, and his eyes sought the dark for any familiar landmarks. The streets were empty, all the buildings dark. Except for the street lamps, the town might have been deserted. That was fine with Jesse. He didn’t want anybody sniffing around while he worked with very delicate and sensitive dimensional magic.

“You’re not really going to make me sit in the car and wait for you, are you?”

“No.” He parked outside the church. “You don’t have to wait in the car. I’d like you somewhere I can keep an eye on you. Come on.” Jesse had hoped this would be easy, but as they left the car and moved toward the old building, his optimism began to fade a little bit. “At least there don’t seem to be any vampires around here. That’s something.”
