Chapter 20

The rift was attuned to his presence. If ever he needed proof that his being was tied to dimensional magic now, this was it.

Jesse circled a few more times, focusing on different aspects on each revolution. He didn’t know how much time passed. He wasn’t sure he even cared. What he did know was that he needed his notebook in order to record as much of this as possible.

He was halfway to the car when Dominique’s muffled scream split the night.

Jesse didn’t think; he just moved. He vibrated with the sound. Dominique wouldn’t scream unless there was something very wrong, and he would kill anything or anybody that hurt her. He would kill anything that even touched her. Every parental instinct he never thought he had roared to life. He had his gun in his hand, and the safety off, by the time he reached the front door.
