Once they were both settled in the car, Gideon hunched over, half on Jesse’s lap, the blanket covering him completely. Jesse rested his hand on Gideon’s nape, his fingertips moving over the skin in absentminded circles.

Thinking it would be better to avoid surprises, Jesse leaned forward slightly. “Do you live in Colney Heath alone?”

“Yes.” Grace glanced at him in the rearview mirror. “Your father and I aren’t divorced in your dimension?”

“No. You’re not.” Would it be wise to tell her the truth? Jesse didn’t want to mention it. It would just be too difficult to explain her own death to her. “It feels like everything is topsy-turvy in this dimension.”
