“There’s enough for all of you,” he said. “Should we try corrupting David with decadent American food, too?”

Her laughter always made him smile. “We can try, but that boy is a health nut. He’s half the reason I don’t worry about Jesse more than I do. I know David will take care of Jesse when he forgets to eat.”

Grace held up the platter for him so it would be closer to the stove, and he set the two sandwiches he’d already constructed into the oil. “Those health nuts are the ones you usually have to watch out for. Let’s make him an extra large sandwich, shall we?”

It was actually kind of relaxing working with Grace in the kitchen. Gideon had tried to keep his distance from her—out of respect, but also because he didn’t want to monopolize any time she might be able to give Jesse or Dominique. But now he could see just where Jess got some of his grace, and his charm, and that sense of putting people at ease that Gideon had always been jealous of.
