“Caryn’s walking away from this deal with a shitload of cash and no regrets. I understand you want out. That’s fine. I never intended to make you do anything you didn’t want to. But what I don’t understand is where you see me in your life now.”
“We got lucky with Caryn. What if she was exactly what she presented herself to be? Just a lonely woman looking for somebody to spend an evening with. And…” Brandon turned away. “I think maybe you can’t fit in my life now.”
“What?” He couldn’t breathe. He had no idea how he was managing to form words. “What about this afternoon? What about the things you said? Or was that just to make me feel better so you didn’t have to feel guilty about Caryn?”
“No…don’t think that, Seth. I meant every word I said this afternoon. But…this is your life. This is who you are. And even if you didn’t make me participate, it wouldn’t change what you’re doing. And I don’t think I can live like this. It was all a game before. But it’s not now.”
