Chapter 33

She held onto that mild glow all the way until the pounding started at her door.

Grabbing her short, silk robe, Caryn pulled it on and cinched it as she crossed the room. It was after midnight, so there were few possibilities on who it could be, but when she peered through the crack, she wasn’t really surprised to see a flustered Seth on the other side.

“What’s wrong?” she said after she’d opened the lock and pulled the door wider.

“Brandon.” Seth pushed into her room without waiting for an invitation. “He was fired.”

She looked down the empty hall before shutting the door. “So where is he?”

“At his place. Upset. Really upset. He says he wants out of the game.”

Inwardly, Caryn winced. She couldn’t say she was surprised. Brandon was a soft touch, and new at this. Of course, he’d be scared at the first sign of trouble.

“So you’re not really trying to talk him into sticking it out, are you? Because that’s going to backfire on you.”
