Chapter 13

“How is she?” he asked.

“No word yet. They had to take CT scans, so that will take a while.”

“Damn! I’m so sorry this happened.”

“It wasn’t your fault. You did everything you could to prevent it. It’s just that everyone was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“Do you mind if I stick around for a while? My dad can’t pick me up until he gets off work at seven.”

“No, I don’t mind. Maybe you’ll be able to get my mind off it. You can tell me a little about yourself.”

Steve started to tell her about his life in this part of New York.

A young nurse came into the waiting room. “Dr. Cooper?” she called out. “Addison Cooper?” She looked around until Sonny stood up and waved at her. “Dr. Refai would like to talk with you,” she said.

“I’ll be here,” Steve assured her as she got up to follow the nurse back into the examining area. She nodded.

Dr. Refai was a young Indian man with thin dark hair. He stood up and walked to her when he saw them enter.
