Chapter 14

When the nurse came in on her rounds late that night, Sonny was still sitting in the chair, her elbows on the bed, still wide awake.

Mid-morning, Mary returned.

“How is she doing?” she asked as she went to the bed to look at Mycah.

“Still hasn’t moved,” Sonny said.

“She will,” Mary assured her daughter. “What about you? You look more ragged than she does.”

“I couldn’t sleep last night. I just sat here and looked at her.”

“What did the tests say?”

“It’s a severe concussion. There was some bleeding in the frontal lobe and there may be some eye damage, but they won’t know more until she wakes. They didn’t seem too concerned about the bleeding, which they got to stop, and if there’s any eye damage, she may have to wear glasses. I made sure I knew all the ramifications of everything. She’ll probably have a headache for a couple days.”

“But she’ll be okay?”

“They think so. I guess itcould have been worse.”

Mary hugged her daughter.
