Thou wert once of fire,
In a world of pure light,
‘Til thou put on this flesh,
Coming here to this night.
Thy fire is thy guide,
Thy soul is thy light,
But my arms are thy guard,
As I hold thee tonight.
So sleep, sleep, let thy flame be banked low,
For my love shall guard thee in this life below.
Sleep, sleep, through the dark of the night,
‘Til thy flame may return to thy world of pure light.
“It’s beautiful,” said Kelwyn softly. “You’re beautiful. I wish you would sing more.”
Now it was Harun’s turn to sigh in the darkness. “I will try. Music brings back such memories, though. I used to sing this to my little brother, on nights when my mother was too tired and he wouldn’t sleep. Remembering them is…hard. I hadn’t truly consciously meant to start singing. It was only some bit of old habit, I suppose, trying to soothe someone to sleep.”
