“Funny seeing you here again,” Marjorie’s voice said from behind him.

“Howard’s working late. I thought I’d make him dinner,” Jason explained.

Marjorie looked him up and down, her skeptical eye assessing him in a way that reminded Jason of a strict school teacher in a movie deciding how to deal with a student.

“Good,” Marjorie said. “I think that’s very good.”

“Well, thank you,” Jason said with a bit of relief, glad that he had passed muster.

“And where is Howard working?” Marjorie asked.

“For me,” Jason answered. “He’s helping me out with some stuff at the company.”

“And you’re here?” Marjorie asked.

“Yes, well,” Jason stammered. “He’s taken on a few projects.”

“I see,” Marjorie said, while keeping a stone face that made Jason wonder what she was thinking.

“I made him a vice president,” Jason said, hoping Marjorie’s face would change.

“Well, that’s quite a commitment,” Marjorie pointed out.
