Chapter 48

A silence settled between them. Josh wanted to know more, he had to know more, and not only for his personal curiosity. There was definitely something about Gavin that made Josh’s heart beat faster. Whether that was fear or attraction, he couldn’t tell.

“Sorry,” he said finally, when he couldn’t tell if he’d offended Gavin or not. “Must have been rough.”

Gavin shrugged again. “You can’t choose your beginnings. You can only chose what you make of it.”

Josh found himself nodding in agreement, even though he was acutely aware that he had yet to make much out of his own meager beginnings. Once he left Wolf Creek, his life would start for real. Then he would have the freedom to live his own life and not be a slave to the pack.

“Why did you decide to become a ranger?” he asked.

“If you don’t mind me asking.”
