Chapter 50

“We are halfway through the alpha testing and no closer to finding our next leader,” she said. She sounded tired, almost resigned. “Not one of them stands out among the rest. Last week, Matthew was the pick of the elders. This week it’s Orin. By the next full moon, a pack leader will have to be chosen, alpha or not.”

“I’m sorry.”

Elaine hung up.

With no place to stay, Josh headed into town to grab a bite. He settled on the Trail Side diner again, and spent the evening eating alone and trying to figure out what to do next. The diner wouldn’t be open forever and he needed somewhere to stay. Explaining to Elaine what Bryce had almost done was out of the question. She would probably see it more as Josh’s weakness and not Bryce’s fault. Because of that, the last place he wanted to be was the main house, but with little money he had no place to go.
