“Ned’s got word out to the fire and trail crews, but it’s going to be at least an hour before he can get a team to you.”
“Thanks, Annie,” Gavin said. “Josh will help me recruit some of the family members to help out in the meantime.”
He winked at Josh, who didn’t know how to even begin to explain what little influence he’d have over his family.

At the end of the road, Gavin equipped Josh with a pack that looked about a fifth the size of the one he shouldered. It was all Josh could do to keep up with him, but he wasn’t about to let him down.
By the time they got to the base of the cliff, Josh spotted Matthew and Orin surrounded by half a dozen pack members. Even Elaine was there. The only notable absences—besides the elders and Shawna, who was still nursing—were Bryce and Terrence. Neither of their groups had shown up to help. No doubt they were still trying to win the contest.
