Chapter 61

Josh smiled and nodded. “Lead on.”

It took them a half hour of grueling hiking that involved scrambling up a steep scree field scattered with boulders as big as compact cars before they reached the top. Several times, the rocks beneath Josh’s feet gave way under his weight, pulling him down the slope. It was like walking on sharp, pointy quicksand.

Gavin was the first to the top. He took off his pack and walked to the edge. Matthew and Orin joined him while the others struggled to catch their breath. Even though every muscle in Josh’s body ached and he hated heights, he inched toward the cliff edge.

“We can’t climb down from here,” Matthew said. “I knew we should have climbed up.”

Gavin just smiled. “Tyrone,” he called down the cliff. “Can you hear me?”

When Josh got to the edge, he dared to look over. On a narrow ledge below, Tyrone lay sprawled out. His knee was twisted at an awkward angle.

“Get up, Tyrone!” Matthew shouted.
