Not that I was a big Christmas sort of fellow, but it would not be Christmas if I didn’t buy gifts for Gracie’s kids, my nephew and my two nieces. It would be even more important now, after the death of their grandmother. Of course, I always bought Gracie and her husband something, Mama too, and the staff, and we always sent around gift baskets to the other funeral homes and florists in the county. And then there were friends to think of, and all the other Christmas stuff which I had lost track of.

Charlie appeared at my office door, wearing his winter coat and clutching his wallet and cell phone.

“Ready when you are, boss,” he said softly.

“Hi,” I said.
