Chapter 26

What happened? Did I say that aloud? Let’s try one more time.

“What happened?” He managed to choke out.

“There was a car accident…lay down—we don’t want you damaging yourself any further tonight.”

December 30th, the day before

Keith intended to start drinking and not stop until he passed out. He’d done that every night since Bobby left. He called Marla, his housekeeper and gave her leave with pay. He heard Zach banging on his door. I want to be left alone; I was stupid. I miss him terribly. He was right—the fifteen years mean nothing. Zach and Jason are barely speaking to me. Zach knows Bobby was the one for me, and I was stubborn. I hope I haven’t completely blown it. Keith got up from his chair and staggered. I’m going to get him back; I’m going to pick up the rings, so he knows I’m serious. I have to get sober. The stores are open tomorrow. I’ll call the jeweler now and tell him that I still want the rings, and I’m going to pick them up in the morning.
